Puppetry & Storytelling

Class # 29   Grades: 3- 4- 5

Class Overview

Are you a born maker? Do you have so many interests from writing, engineering, painting, acting and sculpting that you just can’t decide what to take? Do you love theatre but feel shy about performing? Come and explore the fun and creative world of puppetry! On our voyage you will get to learn about this ancient art form from all over the world and discover for yourself why Minnesota has one of the largest puppet communities in the country. From Javanese shadow puppets, tiny theatre Lambe Lambe shows from Brazil, and the classic Czeck marionettes and so much more. You will get a first hand look at the different styles of puppetry from local artists and learn how to engineer and create them yourself. We will paint, sculpt, create sound effects, write, build, and play as you work as part of a team or solo to bring your imagination to the stage

Laura Korynta

Hello, my name is Laura Korynta, and I teach ESL at Skyview Middle School in North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School district. Aside from teaching, puppetry has been one of my biggest passions. I have worked with local puppet Theatres Barebones and Heart of the Beast since 2017 and I created a traveling pop up puppet show and toured around the Otter Tail community and the Twin Cities. I look forward to bringing this engaging, transformative community art to the summer institute.
