Class Overview
Do you love learning about exotic and unheard of animals? Building and designing things? If so, then Exploring Habitats Through STEAM is the perfect place for you! Join us this summer designed for 1st and 2nd graders to strengthen students’ critical thinking skills, ingenuity, and problem solving mindset, all while exploring various animal habitats.
This class will focus on dessert, tundra, rainforest and ocean habits through a STEAM lens. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. During this class your student will be an inventor, designer, artist, collaborative team member, researcher all while making predictions, evaluating, and revising their creations.
STEAM problem solvers in this class will:
- experience habitats and animals first hand through off-campus excursions
- work collaboratively to create realistic habitat art projects
- have real life encounters with animals from our featured habitats
- learn through non-fiction read alouds
- problem solve during STEAM group challenges
- Explore habitats through technology
- engage in our hands-on STEAM creation station

Teachers
Madeline Zukowski
Maddie Zukowski is a Kindergarten teacher at Snail Lake School in the Mounds View School District. She has been teaching for 11 years, has her Master’s of Education from the University of Minnesota and this will be her fourth summer teaching at Summer Academy. Ms. Zukowski has been a pioneer with S.T.E.A.M. education in the Mounds View District and is passionate about helping students grow their skills in problems solving, inquiry, and critical thinking. She is excited to guide students through a fun, hands-on exploration of animals and environments from all over the world at Summer Academy.
Denise Woodcock
Denise Woodcock is a Kindergarten specialist teacher at Snail Lake School in the Mounds View School District. Her specialist areas include art, science, music, technology and physical education. Denise has her Master’s of Education in Teaching and Learning from St. Mary’s. She has been teaching for 27 years and is excited for her 4th year at Summer Academy.
Kara Cassidy
Kara Cassidy is a Kindergarten teacher at Snail Lake School in the Mounds View School District. She has her Master’s of Education from the University of Minnesota and has been teaching for 10 years. Ms. Cassidy has a passion for developing independent critical thinking problem solvers as she explores alongside her students at Summer Academy.
Megan George
Megan George is a 5th grade teacher at Liberty Ridge Elementary in the South Washington County District. She has her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Minnesota State University Mankato and has been teaching for two years. This is will be Megan’s second year teaching Summer Academy, and she can’t wait to drive the curiosity and creativity of all her students this summer!
