Class Overview

Do you love learning about exotic and unheard of animals? Building and designing things? If so, then Exploring Habitats Through STEAM is the perfect place for you! Join us this summer designed for 1st and 2nd graders to strengthen students’ critical thinking skills, ingenuity, and problem solving mindset, all while exploring various animal habitats.


This class will focus on dessert, tundra, rainforest and ocean habits through a STEAM lens. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. During this class your student will be an inventor, designer, artist, collaborative team member, researcher all while making predictions, evaluating, and revising their creations.

Madeline Zukowski

Maddie Zukowski is a Kindergarten teacher at Snail Lake School in the Mounds View School District.  She has been teaching for 8 years, has her Master’s of Education from the University of Minnesota, and this will be her first time teaching Summer Academy. Maddie has been a pioneer with the S.T.E.A.M. initiative in the Mounds View District and is passionate about helping students grow their skills in problems solving, inquiry, and critical thinking.  

Denise Woodcock

Denise Woodcock is a Kindergarten specialist teacher at Snail Lake School in the Mounds View School District. Her specialist areas include art, science, music, technology  and physical education. Denise has her Master’s of Education in Teaching and Learning from St. Mary’s. She has been teaching 23 years, and is excited for her first year at Summer Academy.

Kara Cassidy

Kara Cassidy is a kindergarten teacher at Snail Lake School in the Mounds View School District.  She has a Master’s of Education from the University of Minnesota and has been teaching for six years. This is Ms. Cassidy’s fourth year as a member of the Summer Academy family, and she can’t wait to explore alongside her students teaching a NEW course this summer.

Megan George

Megan George is a 5th grade teacher at Liberty Ridge Elementary in the South Washington County District. She has her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Minnesota State University Mankato and has been teaching for two years. This is will be Megan’s second year teaching Summer Academy, and she can’t wait to drive the curiosity and creativity of all her students this summer!
