Summer Academy Players Presents: Great Americans of the 20th CenturyClass # 46 Grades: 4- 5- 6- 7
The stage… the lights… the music… the applause! Theatre is a magical experience where you can learn, laugh, play, and have a ridiculously good time. Join us this summer as we use creativity and skill to bring to life a story on the stage to share with others. This year, we will be exploring the history of great Americans from all areas of life: scientists, artists, politicians, inventors, athletes, and more. We will become not only actors, but set designers, costumers, and prop makers. We will be singing and dancing in this production about an award show that is honoring America’s past heroes. All levels of experience are welcome, so don’t be afraid to come and find your place in this magical world of theatre.
Please note: Due to the performance nature of this course, attendance is required for all of the Open House (June 26th, 6-8pm) and on the final day of the Academy (June 27th). We will have a total of four performances between the two days.
Rachel Cathey has been teaching at Fridley Middle School for 18 years. For most of those years she taught 5th grade, but moved this past year into teaching theatre, choir, and art for grades 5-8. She is also in charge of the middle school theatre department and directs the Fridley Youth Community Theatre. Ms. Cathey experienced Summer Academy for many years as a student and teacher’s aide, and started teaching at the Academy with a class about the Renaissance Era. She then taught Animals in Art for eight years, but has decided to bring her theatre expertise to the Academy with this new course. Ms. Cathey has been directing youth theatre for five years and has been performing on stage with local theatres for ten years. She has a passion for history and for bringing the joy of theatre to young people, so this new course will be a wonderful opportunity to meld these areas into one fun-filled experience.
